Abhainn Shira

Martin Goldie

East,
beyond Loch Dochart, far below,
the Abhainn Shira lay,
like a bored child’s ribbon
discarded wanton
on a russet carpet.
Its silver glitter drew
my sleep-starved eyes,
blinking in the early morning sun,
to distant hills towering in hazy silhouette
above a tranquil pink-tinged loch,
like a herd of sleeping elephants.
